The MCP23017 can convert 16-bit parallel data to serial data via the IIC interface and can convert between the two. It integrates a power-on reset (POR) circuit to reset the device to its default state. It also features two opposing programmable interrupt source outputs. The polarity inversion register configures the GPIO input polarity.
