If you are interested in mixing up your comparative anatomy class or just want to try something new, check out the preserved Atlantic sharpnose shark. This shark differs slightly from the dogfish shark, the most common preserved shark specimen. Unlike the dogfish, the sharpnose has no spiracles, possesses an anal fin, and the female's ovaries are found on the left side of the body. However, they do share many of the same anatomical features such as the valvular intestine, rectal gland, and claspers on the male pelvic fins. As an in-class activity, have students explore the anatomical similarities and differences between the 2 species for themselves. Note: Supplies are limited. Dissection manuals are not available for the Atlantic sharpnose shark. However, you can utilize the same dissection protocol as for the dogfish shark. Size, 27"+. Plain: No color injection. Preserved in formalin and shipped 1 per bag. Price listed is for 1 specimen.
